Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 07-06-2020 @ 14:41

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2020-3031

A resident of Beatrice received a phone call that had the area code of “202” on it. An automated message informed him his social security number had been used fraudulently and to call the number back. The victim was aware that these types of calls involve con artists, knaves, rogues, and other criminals of ill repute who are attempting to swindle victims by using subterfuge or chicanery while pretending to be a government agent or entity who is there to help.

The victim did not suffer any financial loss and did not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to the suspects. He called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and spoke with an investigator who provided him with an additional reporting option of going to the Federal Trade Commission to report the incident at https://www.ftc.gov/ via the Gage County Sheriff’s Office website at http://www.gagecountysheriff.us/fraud .

The Beatrice Police Department was advised of this report to the sheriff’s office for their records and files.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges caution when dealing with unknown or unfamiliar persons, whether it is on the telephone, online, via the mail, or in person. Do not provide financial, personal, or confidential information to persons you are not completely sure are legitimate. If you have questions or need assistance, contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
