Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 09-10-2020 @ 1400

LOCATION: Rural Pickrell, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2020-4144

A resident of rural Pickrell notified a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator that he had received a phone call and message from someone stating they were with the Social Security Administration and to call them back. When he did, they asked for his name and then told him “suspicious activity” was associated with his social security number and asked for the last four of his number to confirm the issue. At this time, he realized it was a scam and told them so. The suspect then threatened him with arrest and the victim disconnected and contacted the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.

After the investigator confirmed the victim had not lost any money, he was advised to notify his bank and have them take precautions to protect his bank accounts. He was also advised to monitor his mail and be cautious of other scams.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents about providing personal, confidential, or financial information to unknown persons over the phone, via the internet, through the mail or in person. Even a small amount of information may be sufficient for a suspect to either commit identity theft or access financial or credit accounts.

If you believe you have been targeted for a scam, do not provide any information to the suspects and contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
