Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 02-17-2021 @ 4:50 pm

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2021-0584

A resident of Beatrice notified investigators at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office that she had received several phone calls from a suspect who claimed to be from the Social Security Administration and said her social security number had been associated with fraud and she had to call them back immediately or her social security number would be permanently suspended.

The victim did not call the suspect back and has not lost any money, but she wanted to notify the sheriff’s office of the scam so the public could be made aware of the scam and other people would not fall for this type of fraud.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to be aware there are numerous ways for people to become victims of a scam or fraud, however there are some “red flags” that are indicative of fraud, such as demanding immediate payment over the phone/internet, requesting payment via non-standard means such as using gift cards, demanding secrecy or an immediate resolution.

If you think you are being scammed, contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
