Social Security Scam Phone Call

DATE & TIME: 10-09-2019 @ 12:55 pm

LOCATION: Beatrice

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam Phone Call

CASE #: 2019-5367

A Beatrice resident notified a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator that she had received an automated (“robo”) call with a message stating they were with the Social Security Administration and some fraudulent activity had been discovered that was associated with her social security number. She was instructed to call back to 956-394-3976.

The Beatrice resident is aware of scam phone calls and other attempts to defraud residents in Beatrice and Gage County due to recent sheriff’s office press releases about other, similar cases. She did not call the suspects back and has not lost any money from this incident. The Beatrice Police Department was notified of the report to the sheriff’s office for their records.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office warns residents there have been an increase in the number of reported fraud and scam attempts throughout the county recently. Do not provide any personal, confidential, or financial information to any unknown persons over the telephone. Be wary of demands for immediate action/payment, being told to keep the matter secret, having to pay a fee of some sort to collect a prize or large payout, or the suspect requesting payment through non-standard business practices, such as paying with gift cards or via money transfers, such as Wal-Mart to Wal-Mart payment.

If you receive this type of contact, whether by telephone, mail, on the Internet, or in person, do not provide any information. Discontinue the interaction and contact your local police department, or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
