Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 11-06-2018 @ 9:27 am

LOCATION: Wymore, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2018-5609

A Wymore resident contacted the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report she received a phone call from a number with a 515 area code and the female caller used her name, stated there had been some fraudulent activity with her social security number, and asked the Wymore resident for her social security number. The victim then asked for the suspect’s “badge number” and the suspect hung up on her. She did not give out her social security number, personal, confidential, or financial information to the suspect.

She was advised to monitor her mail for possible fraud, and to check with her financial institution and credit file. The Wymore Police Department was notified of the call for their case records.

The Gage County Sheriffs’ Office urges residents to not give out personal, financial, or confidential information to unknown persons, whether in person, via e-mail, over the phone, or through the mail.  Do not send money or any other form of payment if you believe it is a fraud. Check with a family member, close friend, or trusted financial adviser such as the local banker, to verify a situation. If you believe you have been scammed or defrauded, contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
