Theft By Deception

DATE & TIME: 11-24-2018 @ 12:00 pm

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Theft By Deception

CASE #: 2018-5934

A resident of Beatrice informed an investigator from the Gage County Sheriff’s Office that he had met a woman online and after communicating with her via the Internet, he agreed to send her money so she could come meet him in Beatrice. After sending her $350.00 via Money Gram, the suspect wanted more money, but he declined to send her any additional funds. Realizing it was a scam, he informed his family and they brought him to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to speak with an investigator.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator informed investigators with the Beatrice Police Department about the report to the sheriff’s office and will coordinate any further investigation with them.

The suspect did not provide any personal details or financial information and at this time he has only lost the $350.00 sent via Money Gram, which was picked up in the Philippines. The only identifying information on the suspect is the pseudonym “Jale” and the e-mail of jalemeagan@gmail.com

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be especially careful with online transactions, as the anonymity of the Internet makes it easy for suspects to make unverifiable claims, and can be anywhere in the world. Use caution, talk to family members, a trusted financial adviser such as a banker, or if you have lost money, contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
