Theft by Deception / Car Scam

DATE & TIME: March 11-12, 2022 / 3:55 pm

LOCATION: Holmesville, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Theft by Deception / Car Scam

CASE #: 2022-0966

A Holmesville area resident called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report that on March 11th and 12th, he had been contacted on the phone by a suspect who called himself “David Moore”. The suspect convinced the victim to purchase pre-paid debit cards and then provide the suspect with the redemption information on the cards. In return, the victim was to receive $9,500.00 back and a new car.

The suspect had inveigled the victim through “smooth talking” and other deceptions to believe the transactions were legitimate. After several transactions, the victim realized the money had been taken from the cards and he had lost over a thousand dollars.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents about conducting transactions with unknown persons, whether it be over the phone, via e-mail, in person, or mail. Warning signs that a scam or fraud are occurring would be the request for the purchase or use of gift or debit cards, pressuring to remain silent, threats of arrest or disclosing of secret information, insistence that the transaction is “urgent”, and not allowing you to consult with anyone regarding the matter.

If you receive this type of contact, do not provide any financial information and do not purchase anything. Ask for a call back number, then break contact with the suspect and consult with family members, a trusted friend, a financial advisor such as a banker or accountant. If you believe you are being scammed, call Southeast Communications (402-223-4080) and report the incident to the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office at 402-223-5222  and ask to speak with a deputy or investigator.
